Today is National Preschool Health and Fitness Day! Are you making sure your preschoolers are physically moving, staying healthy and fit?

Over the past three years Child Care Services Association (CCSA) has partnered with the Shape NC initiative, and 15 child care programs in Durham County, to promote healthy eating and learning through active play for children birth to age 5. The Shape NC initiative implemented three evidence based programs that promote best practices in nutrition and active play: Be Active Kids® (BAK), Preventing Obesity by Design (POD) through the Natural Learning Initiative and Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care (Go NAP SACC).

Don’t know where to start with assessing what you are doing to promote physical activities?

GO NAPSACC offers a number of Self Assessments that allow you to gauge your program’s current practices in areas such as Child Nutrition, Physical Activity, Outdoor Play and more! You can create an action plan and use the Tips & Materials link provided to find examples of best practices, activities and resources that will help you reach your goals. Learn more.

Need ideas for physical activities?

Check out the Be Active Kids® website for a variety of resources that will get your kids moving! You’ll find links to free resources, fun teaching activities and parent engagement ideas that focus on health and fitness. You’ll also find opportunities for professional development. Learn more.

Let’s celebrate National Preschool Health and Fitness Day, every day, not just one day in January. No matter if you are a family child care home provider, a child care center or a parent, you can access these incredible resources as guidance on your path to improving the health and fitness of children.

Will you make a commitment to improving nutrition, physical activity and to creating spaces for vigorous activities for all children? YES! We can do it together and create a healthier community.

Let’s get our children moving with PURPOSE!
